River Cruise Tipping in Europe

To tip or not to tip (because it may already included)? That’s the question we are asked all the time because let’s be honest, river cruise lines don’t make it easy to remember. So to help you out, let’s take a look at how different river cruise lines work with tips.

Uniworld Europe River Cruise

Uniworld River Royale on the Rhone River.

Note, this information only applies to Europe. Gratuities vary based on region (like I said, they don’t make it easy!) and these are suggested amounts by the cruise line.

AmaWaterways

  • Gratuities not included in the cruise fare. May be charged on credit card or cash.
  • Cruise Manager €3 per passenger, per day.
  • Crew €12 per passenger, per day (distributed amongst them).
  • Local guide €1-2 per passenger, per tour. Cash is best in this case as you’re not likely to see them again.

Avalon

  • Please tip the Cruise Director, Local Hosts, Local Guides, driver and ship’s crew.
  • Avalon doesn’t offer any suggestions and simply notes that gratuities are discretionary.
  • Pre or post land tours: gratuities are included (wait staff for included meals, hotel staff and porters).

Uniworld

  • No need to pull out your wallet when on Uniworld. Gratuities are included for everything, including pre and post land tours.

Viking

  • Gratuities not included the cruise fare.
  • Program Director/Tour Escort €2 per passenger, per day. Please tip them in cash.
  • Onboard staff €12 per passenger, per day (distributed amongst them). May be charged on credit card or cash at the end of the cruise (except in Portugal).
  • Local city guides €2 per passenger, per day. Cash is best in this case as you’re not likely to see them again.
  • Coach drivers €1 per passenger, per day. Cash is best in this case as you’re not likely to see them again.
  • Viking doesn’t offer a suggested amount for Tour Escorts or Program Directors. Please tip them separately in cash.
